IIT-JEE Main 2017

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has scheduled this year’s IIT-JEE Main pen and paper based examination on April 3 and computer based examination on April 9 and 10. Students are keenly preparing for the all important exam which is expected to be written by over 12 lakh students from across the country.

Experts say that the next nearly two months are important in the preparation and the task is cut out for the students to prepare for the board exam and entrances at the same time.

“Only two lakh students will be selected from the 12 lakh appearing for IIT-JEE Main test. They will then be appearing for the IIT-JEE Advanced for admission to IITs. There are nearly 25,000 seats directly available for those who qualify IIT-JEE Main, in NITs and centrally funded and other institutions. So the preparation for the exam is crucial in different respects,” said Dr S Rajookrishnan, former joint commissioner of entrance examinations, Kerala.

“The coming weeks should primarily be utilised for quick revision and taking lots of mock tests of IIT-JEE. Each test must be followed by an in-depth test analysis to know the weaker areas and rectification. Students may also take subject-wise help from experts for the weaker areas,” said Ramesh Batlish, expert with coaching firm FIIT-JEE.

Ajay Antony, course director, IIT-JEE Training, Triumphant Institute of Management Education Pvt Ltd. (T.I.M.E.), said that students should keep in mind that the syllabus for the JEE Main examination is mostly the syllabus of Class 11 and 12.

“So while preparing for your upcoming board examinations, read up with the dual objectives of scoring for the descriptive as well as the MCQ challenge ahead,” says Ajay Antony.

“The importance of taking a good number of model or mock examinations cannot be said enough. While taking model examinations, ensure that you simulate the examination atmosphere as closely as possible. Do not take breaks between the full length model tests. Follow the instructions on the model examination test booklet/online screen fully and devote the complete 180 minutes to testing,” says Ajay Antony.

“One has to develop speed by solving JEE level problems with time management. Practice of JEE level questions is necessary as it improves your reasoning and analytical ability. One must be careful to read the instructions when attempting the actual exam to ensure that there is no change in pattern or marking scheme from previous years,” said Ramesh Batlish. Reading NCERT books may not be sufficient to crack conceptual problems asked in entrance exams also, he adds.

Batlish asks students to practice meditation to develop inner calm, poise, confidence and power of concentration.

“These matter a lot and will help you on the day of examination. Five to six hours of sleep every night is a must,” he says.

The expert asks students to use short methods for calculations in maths and skip irrelevant steps to save time.

“JEE (Main) is not difficult, but tricky. Start with conventional methods of problems solving but improvise constantly and build your own shortcuts and ways for problem solving. Never use calculator while preparing for the JEE (Main). Being adept in mental calculations can actually increase your speed to a great extent,” Batish advices.

“For a three hour paper with three subjects, generally students tend to give one hour each. It is advisable that they give 40-45 minutes in attempting questions from any one subject they feel confident and move on to second subject and then to the third. In the remaining time the unsolved questioned may be reviewed. This would help in increasing the attempting rate. Double check before marking the OMR sheet,” said Batlish.

“Don't get upset if any section is tough. You can score in other sections. Don’t guess if you have no idea about the concept involved in a question. Don’t be nervous if you find the paper tough, since it is the relative performance that counts. Don’t take the online exam if you are not comfortable with computers and are not adequately trained for the same,” he says.

JEE 2016  shall  have  two  papers,  Paper-1  (B.E./B. Tech.) and Paper-2 (B. Arch./B. Planning).
Depending upon on the course (s) candidates are seeking admission, may take Paper-1 B.E. / B. Tech.), or Paper-2 B. Arch./ B. Planning), or both.
